Ableton's Link technology is now part of Live. If you haven’t heard about Link, it’s a technology that lets you play electronic instruments together effortlessly. Link synchronises beat, phase and tempo of Live and Link-enabled iOS apps over a wireless or ethernet connection, which means you can use it to play together with others and make music using a range of devices.
Get more from your samples with the overhauled Simpler
Simpler, Live’s powerful but easy-to-use sampling instrument, has been completely overhauled with a new interface, warping, slicing, and new analogue-modelled filters built in conjunction with Cytomic. Slice samples across the keyboard, play single hits, or warp long samples so that they always stay in time with your song.
Improved waveforms, meters, and colouring.
New waveforms show more detail and zoom and scroll smoothly. To help keep your Sets organised, new clips take their track’s colour, and tracks are now automatically coloured by default.
Updated meters show both peak and RMS, to indicate both sudden changes in level as well as perceived loudness. This makes it easier to control the dynamics of both individual tracks and your overall mix.
Great sounding analogue-modelled filters
Live 9.5 introduced new analogue-modelled filters based on classic vintage hardware models that will self-resonate, feedback, and distort beautifully. These filters were built in collaboration with Cytomic and are included in Simpler, Sampler, Operator, and Auto Filter.
Live 9 Suite comes with more than 3000 production-ready sounds that give you the full range of vintage synthesisers, drum kits and one-shot samples, acoustic instruments and loops - all powered by Live's built-in synthesisers and effects so they can be tweaked and personalised. All sounds are organised for Live 9's new browser and work seamlessly with all common hardware controllers.
If you’ve used music software before, you’re already familiar with one half of Ableton Live Suite. Live’s Arrangement View is a familiar working space: time moves from left to right, while tracks are stacked vertically.
Live also features the revolutionary Session View: a unique sketchpad for improvising, playing and performing with musical ideas, without the constraints of the timeline. Freely and independently start and stop any number of audio or MIDI loops - everything stays in sync. Almost everything in Live works in real-time - add, reorder or remove devices, play with Live’s flexible track routing and more - all without interrupting your creative flow. Live’s unique Session View makes it easy to improvise with musical ideas. In Live 9, you can now record parameter changes directly into Session View for even more flexibility. Edit automation curves with the mouse to create smooth mix transitions or radical parameter changes in your clips.
Live’s new browser puts all of your instruments and effects, samples, Packs and VST/Audio Units plug-ins in one easy-to-navigate view. Drag and drop folders into the browser from anywhere on your computer. Search as you type, navigate from the keyboard and sort items by various categories. Use your external hardware synthesisers or effects units as if they were plug-ins, via Live’s unique External Instrument and External Audio Effect devices. Use VST or Audio Units instruments and effects alongside Live’s native devices.
Racks let you combine multiple instruments and effects into a single device. Each of the eight Macro knobs can be mapped to any number of parameters in a Rack, allowing for customised controls. Ableton’s Pack store allows you to browse and download instruments and patches.
Convert your favourite drum break with the Drums-to-MIDI feature and reuse it with your own sounds. Speed up your remixing work by using Harmony-to-MIDI to get the notes and chords from the original audio stems. Or simply seed your creativity with inspiring, natural-feeling MIDI grabbed directly from the most exciting parts of your music collection. Your voice is the new keyboard: sing, beatbox, tap a rhythm on your desk, or play any solo instrument to capture your musical ideas as they come. Then use the Melody- or Drums-to-MIDI feature to turn your recordings into MIDI clips that you can edit and reuse with any sound.
Live’s new Glue Compressor, developed in collaboration with Cytomic, is modelled on a classic 80s console bus compressor, both for its great sound and also to provide musical results with a simple set of controls. Live’s studio effects - Compressor, Gate and EQ Eight - have been improved with new displays, enhanced controls and better sound, making it easier to see and hear your changes. A new Tuner shows the incoming pitch on an easy-to-read display, for quickly tuning guitars or synthesisers on stage or in the studio.
Max for Live lets you build your own devices for use in Live. Create custom synthesisers, samplers, sequencers, audio effects, and much more. Max for Live also allows you to build devices that modify Live itself, including the properties of tracks, clips, and native Live devices.Every Max for Live device includes an Edit button, allowing you to look at (or modify) how the device was made. And Max for Live comes with a collection of Live’s native interface elements, so you can build devices that look and feel just like Live.
