Rane

You wouldn't think it, but RANE, the name synonymous with big-city hip-hop battles, hails from the tiny town of Mukilteo, Washington -- population 20,000. Founded in 1981 by former employees of Phase Linear Corporation, the company originally sold products aimed at live bands. So popular were they that RANE designed and released eight new products in their first two years of production.

The success caught the attention of Richard Long, the sound designer of famous discos such a Studio 54, Annabels, and Regines. He asked the company to leverage their expertise in updating his famous X3000 crossover, which became the X3000A. A DJ equaliser followed, the Q5000, and finally a fully-fledged DJ mixer, MP24. It quickly became the industry standard.

RANE's final transformation would come in 1998, when the founders attended an Audio Engineering Society convention in New York City. They were approached by a group of hip-hop DJs, who invited them back to their apartment to learn more about the art of turntablism. Over the next three days the makeshift crew hashed out what would become the TTM54 performance mixer, the brand's first hip-hop battle mixer, and the start of a new and profitable era for the company.
