Ribbon Microphones have been around since the 1920s when two guys called Walter and Erwin co-invented the first ribbon mic and loudspeaker. Ribbon is a type of microphone that uses a thin aluminium, duraluminum or nanofilm of electrically conductive ribbon between magnets that creates a voltage.
Considered to be more fragile than other microphones, Ribbon mics will rarely be used outside a studio situation, but can add a very unique sound signature to your recording. There are no set rules, but people love to record brass, vocals and other instruments with a ribbon as they get a very smooth sound.
Ribbon mics require a preamp and lots of clear gain to ensure you have a strong and clear signal, another reason why you will generally always see a ribbon mic in a studio situation.
Here at Mannys Music we understand how important your microphone choice is so our team are here and ready to answer any questions you have, or simply view our extensive range below for more details.
