JBL was founded as Lansing Manufacturing Company by James B Lansing and his business partner Ken Decker in Los Angeles in 1927. The company won recognition early by helping in 1933 to develop the 'Shearer Horn' loudspeaker for the head of the MGM sound department, Douglas Shearer. The Shearer Horn won a Scientific and Technical Academy Award in 1936 and using this experience, Lansing went on to design the Iconic System loudspeaker for cinemas.
The company was bought in 1941 by Altec Service Corporation, renaming itself Altec Lansing. James Lansing left the company in 1946 and founded Lansing Sound, which would become JBL Sound. The company entered rock & roll in 1955 when their D130 loudspeaker was adopted by Leo Fender as the perfect driver for electric guitars.
The company has since become a household name. Their monitors have been a popular choice in recording studios since the 1970s, and stacks of their loudspeakers are a common sight at gigs and festivals. Their products were even the basis of the development of the THX loudspeaker standard and have subsequently become a feature of cinemas the world over. With near 100 years in the game, JBL is a solid choice for any application.
