Røde was founded in 1967 as Freedman Electronics. The founder, Henry Freedman, ran a shop in Sydney selling, installing and servicing audio products. When Henry died in 1987, his son Peter assumed his mantle. Unfortunately for Peter, he had taken over the business at the worst possible time, the "recession Australia had to have," to quote then-Prime-Minister John Howard, was just about to hit.
In need of a lifeline, Peter remembered a microphone he'd seen at a trade show in China years earlier, and was confident he could import, improve and rebrand it. It took off "like a rat up a drain pipe" and so earned the nickname 'Rodent-1'. This microphone would become the Røde NT-1 (the 'ø' is a nod to Peter's Swedish mother, though an accented 'o' in Swedish would actually be stylised as 'ö').
Since then, Røde has moved all of it's manufacturing to its headquarters in Sydney, where the company uses robotics to ensure quality and efficiency in its production processes. Meanwhile, its microphones have become the gold standard for professional studio and broadcast applications. Peter even received an Order of Australia in 2016 for services to export and philanthropy in the arts. To quote another Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull: "Røde Microphones are legend". You're not wrong, Mal!
