Musician and electronics designer Clifford Cooper founded Orange as a recording studio in London's West End in 1968. Unfortunately for Cooper, the studio wasn't able to make enough money to cover its overheads, and so the ground level of the building was opened as a music shop. Strapped for cash, Cooper sold his own band equipment to cover the wages of his staff.

The store initially sold only second-hand equipment, as it had difficulty obtaining stock. When the problem persisted, Cooper decided to design his own amplifiers for sale. He approached Radio Craft owner Mat Mathias (who would found Matamp) to manufacture the first branded Orange amplifiers. New, text-free street signs in London at the time inspired the symbols seen on the company's amps to this day.

External factors saw the company go through a period of hibernation from the late '70s until the mid '90s, with Cooper personally building and selling amplifiers to special order. Then, in 1997, the company approached Noel Gallagher of Oasis (an avid Orange player) to get opinions on how to update their amplifiers for the modern guitarist. The award-winning AD Series was the result, and the company's product line is now revered for it's enormous crunch and epic sustain.
