Uli Behringer founded his company while attending the Robert Schumann conservatory in Düsseldorf. The sound engineer and pianist noticed the university didn't have much equipment available for students to use, and so set about building his own. Orders from fellow students rolled in, and soon Uli found he had more demand than capacity to fill it, resulting in the creation of the company in 1989.
In 2002, the company unveiled Behringer City, an enormous (110-square-kilometre) production facility based in mainland China. Vertically integrated, the plant produces materials and components for all of the company's products before assembly and testing. This allows the company to exercise a high level of quality control while keeping costs low.
This balance of price and performance can be seen in the Behringer's forays into synthesizers and drum machines. The company has produced faithful reproductions of classic analogue hardware such as the SH-101, TB-303, TR-808, Odyssey, Model D, and Pro One. This has led to a democratisation of sounds and devices that were previously unattainable for many musicians due to their cost and rarity.
