Electro Harmonix

New York-based Electro-Harmonix was founded by Mike Matthews in 1968. It was a time which saw a growing demand for guitar pedals following their use by The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. Seeing an opportunity in the market, Matthews started building partnerships to produce devices under his brand. This would eventually lead him to local inventor and electrical engineer Robert Myer.

The company's first products were the Axis fuzz pedal and the LPB-1 Linear Power Booster, both released in 1969. It was that same year that the company sold the first prototype of their most famous guitar pedal: the Big Muff. It was a device that was intended to crib the fuzz tones of guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, but instead sounded completely unique, with a big bass boost, crazy harmonics, and sustain for days.

Other iconic Electro-Harmonix pedals include the Small Stone phase shifter, Small Clone chorus, Electric Mistress flanger, Memory Man analogue delay and Holy Grail digital reverb, just to name a few. The list of Electro-Harmonix players reads like a who's who of alternative rock: Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan, Chris Cornell, Flea, John Frusciante, David Gilmour, Jonny Greenwood, J Mascis, Omar Rodríguez-López, Kevin Shields, and Jack White. EHX pedals are the stuff of legend.
