Jackson Guitars was founded in California in 1980 by Grover Jackson. The luthier had been selling Stratocaster-style guitars under the name of his former partner, Wayne Charvel, but when approached by metal guitarist Randy Rhoads with an idea for an individualised design, Grover decided it needed a new name.
The Jackson Rhoads was born. Built to the guitarist's specifications, the 'Concorde' was a sleeker, sharper take on the classic Flying V with a distinctive asymmetrical body, angled headstock, and 'shark fin' inlays. The metal legend's tragic death in 1982 meant he never played the final production model, but his enduring popularity inadvertently put the brand on the map.
These days, Jackson Guitars build a range of hotted-up axes and pummelling basses for some of the biggest names in heavy and progressive music. As part of Fender, they produce everything from painstaking dream machines to reliable workhorses and affordable student models. If you like your music precise, fast, and loud, then you owe it to your yourself to pick one up.
