Film mix engineer Keith R Klawitter founded KRK in 1986 with the idea of making speakers that would bring more clarity and punch to his mixes. Word soon spread of Klawitter's designs, and he would spend the next years hand-building commission speakers for studio and live applications before settling on a set of products for mass production.
Fast-forward to the 2000s. Bedroom-produced dance and hip-hop is booming, and KRK studio monitors are at the centre of it. Cheap and well-constructed with hyped mids and extended lows, the 'yellow-eyed' monitors were everything a DJ or producer needed to craft thudding dance mixes that held up on a full-range club system.
These days, KRK monitors are as ubiquitous as CDJs and 808s. They have not only continued to inform the sonic palette of modern producers, but have moved it forward with an adjustable frequency response that has made them some of the most versatile and cost-effective speakers on the market today.
