Clavia Digital Musical Instruments (AKA Nord), started out in 1983 in suburban Stockholm basement. Founders Hans Nordelius and Mikael Carlsson had set themselves the task of creating the world's first digital drum for commercial sale. The Digital Percussion Plate 1 was the result, and the lineage of this early innovation can be seen in the brand's drum pad modules and percussion synthesizers.
It was in 1995, however, when Clavia stuck gold with the release of the Nord Lead, a virtual analogue synthesizer Sound on Sound described as "a magic piece of electronics". Clad in the brand's signature red and sporting countless knobs, the Lead took the power and flexibility of digital signal processing (DSP), and presented it in a user interface that was both intuitive and approachable. The dark days of menu-diving were over.
Clavia's line of DSP keyboards now includes performance synthesizers, electric stage pianos and organs. With superb build quality, endless features, and a tone that rivals the analogue instruments they were modelled off, Nord keyboards have built a reputation for reliability as bold as their blood-red colour scheme.
